Cubs Vs. Astros: July 21 Game Recap
After one of the more emotional and fantastic victories of the Cubs 2010 campaign on Tuesday night, the team turned to Ted Lilly to keep the momentum rolling.
Through the first 4 innings, both pitchers were lights out. With two outs in the 5th inning, however, Brett Myers gave up an RBI double to rookie shortstop Starlin Castro. Myers didn’t get much help from Carlos Lee in left field, who misplayed the ball off of the wall giving himself little chance at throwing the runner, Ted Lilly, out at the plate.
The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the 8th inning, when Astros pinch hitter, Pedro Feliz hit a solo homer with one out off of Lilly. The score remained 1-1 through the 11th inning with the Cubs thwarting two man on second with 1 out opportunities in the 9th and 1oth innings, as well as a leadoff bunt single from Ryan Theriot in the 11th.
Bob Howry was called on in the 12th inning, and quickly gave up two singles to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd with no outs, James Russell came on in relief and the floodgates opened. Jason Michaels doubled home both runners, then Angel Sanchez singled him home, making the score 4-1 going into the bottom of the 12th.
The Cubs fought back with 2 outs in the 12th on a 2 out, 2 run home run by Geovany Soto, but the comeback ended there.
The Cubs record following Wednesday’s game is 43-53 and they are 11.5 games behind the NL Central leading St. Louis Cardinals. Those same Cardinals are heading to Wrigley for 3 games this weekend, starting Friday.
